Is the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effect of dandelion true?

Dandelion records were first found in the Tang Dynasty herbal: “sweet, flat, non-toxic. The housewife has swollen breast. “
“The book of Herba” records dandelion can cure the sores, and also treat the evil thorn and fox urine prickles.
“Compendiumofmateriamedica” records dandelion is the main treatment of women’s breast carbuncle, detoxification of food toxicity, qi stagnation, heat poisoning, anti-inflammatory swelling, tuberculosis, dingswollen.
The Pharmacopoeia of the people’s Republic of China records that dandelion has the functions of clearing heat and detoxifying, eliminating swelling and dispersing knot, diuretic and clearing the blood, and can be used for the treatment of ulcerative, mastitis, ௑௑疬 eye red, pharyngeal pain, lung carbuncle, intestinal carbuncle, damp hot jaundice and heat drenched pain.
Dandelion, as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is often used in combination with other drugs. So far, dandelion plays an important role in anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immunity improvement, and is widely used in the development and application of nutrition and health products and natural drugs due to its low side effects.
The main components of dandelion
Dandelion is a perennial herb of Compositae. In recent years, with the development of high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and other technologies, the components of dandelion have been clearly recognized, mainly including terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, vitamins, sugars, fatty acids, proteins, etc.
(1) Terpenoids: mainly including triterpenes, dandelion, dandelion sterols, sesquiterpene lactones, etc;
(2) Flavonoids: mainly including quercetin, luteolin, etc;
(3) Phenol: mainly including chitin, hydroxycinnamic acid (chlorogenic acid, chicory acid and caffeic acid), coumarin (aescinat and coumarin), etc.
At present, there are many studies on terpenoids, flavonoids, phenols and their derivatives.
Anti-inflammatory effect of dandelion

  1. Anti inflammatory effect
A large number of studies have proved that dandelion has significant anti-inflammatory activity, and the triterpenes, flavonoids, sterols and polysaccharides are the main components.
Dandelion can be used for the treatment of acute mastitis, recurrent oral ulcer, periodontitis, hyperthyroidism, thrombotic hemorrhoids, herpes simplex keratitis, postpartum recovery, and reduction of wound infection rate. It can be used in the internal and external use, and the commonly used dosage is 10-90g.
Dong Changying and others proved that dandelion sterol is a triterpene with good anti-inflammatory effect. Houjingling and other animal models confirmed that dandelion flavonoids are the main anti-inflammatory components of dandelion, and the anti-inflammatory effect is positively related to the dose.
  2. Antitumor effect
Zhang Xue and others studied the effect of dandelion extract on the proliferation of human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), and found that it has antitumor activity.
Shaohui explored the antitumor effect of T-1, an active ingredient of dandelion, and used it to contain 5 μ/ The results showed that the active component of ML dandelion T-1 was mixed with a variety of cancer cells. The results showed that the active component had inhibitory effect on the corresponding cancer cells of breast cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer and ovarian cancer.
  3. Enhance immunity
Dandelion polysaccharide can improve immunity of mice.
The results showed that dandelion polysaccharide could significantly improve the spleen index and thymus index of mice, promote the growth and development of immune organs in mice, and improve the immune ability of mice.
Dandelion in the treatment of gynecological diseases
  4. Recurrent milk, menopause syndrome
Guifengyun mainly consists of dandelion, biochemical Gongying Huiru decoction, Gongying Sanmai drink, Gongying Danggui Shaoyao Powder, which is used in breast return, menopausal syndrome, abdominal pain and other gynecological diseases, and has achieved good clinical effect.
The male Ying Huiru Decoction (containing 30g dandelion) can make the patients back to milk as soon as possible and eliminate the evil dew.
Gongying Sanmai drink (containing 30g dandelion) has a significant effect on menopause syndrome.
Gongying Danggui Shaoyao Powder (containing 30g dandelion) can treat abdominal pain in women and have the effect of removing the disease.
    2 mastitis
Acute mastitis is a chronic suppurative infection of breast, and lactation is more common.
Qijun and others have made significant effect on acute mastitis with dandelion. Among the 58 patients in the treatment group, 57 cases were relieved or disappeared after applying fresh dandelion, and the temperature and blood image decreased or recovered to normal obviously, and 1 case was invalid, and the total effective rate was 98.28%.
Through clinical observation, dandelion has significant curative effect in the treatment of gynecological diseases, and no side effects are found. Because of its low price and can be found all the year round, it brings good news for women with mastitis and is suitable for promotion.
    3 breast cancer
Dandelion is used in traditional folk treatment of breast cancer. However, their use is mainly based on empirical findings and there is not enough scientific evidence.
Ohsm et al. Hypothesized that dandelion can be used as a selective estrogen receptor regulator and as an effective alternative therapy for postmenopausal women. The expression of estrogen related gene (PS2 and progesterone receptor PR) in human breast cancer cells was detected by in vitro experiment system, including cell proliferation experiment, reporter gene experiment and RT-PCR. It was found that dandelion ethanol extract can significantly increase cell proliferation and luciferase activity driven by estrogen reaction elements. The research shows that the hypothesis of the author is true.
Three negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an invasive and fatal subtype of breast cancer, and the treatment is limited. Lixh and other studies on the therapeutic effect and molecular mechanism of dandelion extract on TNBC cells. The results showed that the main reason for its anti-cancer effect was apoptosis caused by endoplasmic reticulum stress. These findings suggest that dandelion extract may be a potential TNBC treatment.
    4 infertility
In today’s society, age-related infertility has become a social problem.
The extract T-1 of dandelion is an effective active component of dandelion extract. The leaves and stems of dandelion are one of the drugs for the treatment of some patients with ovarian hyporesponsiveness (POR), but the molecular mechanism is not clear.
Foreign scholars, Wang T, etc., found that the extract T-1 may promote steroid synthesis and improve ovarian endocrine function by promoting GC proliferation and up-regulation of GC receptor expression, so as to treat female infertility.
In short, dandelion, as a Chinese herbal medicine with the same origin of medicine and food, has many pharmacological activities, especially in the treatment of gynecological diseases, malignant tumors, cancer and other aspects.
Because dandelion resources are abundant, widely distributed, cheap and easy to obtain, it will be more and more popular. At the same time, dandelion also contains rich protein, carbohydrate, fat, trace elements and vitamins, which is worth our comprehensive utilization in medical treatment, new drug development, food health care, beauty, animal husbandry and other aspects.
As mentioned above, dandelion has many functions and has great medicinal value. However, it is still necessary to remind that a large number of studies have been carried out on the pharmacological effects of dandelion at home and abroad, but few studies on human body. Although dandelion has not found serious adverse reactions at present, its safety is still lack of clinical evidence, and the interaction between drugs is not clear, and further research is needed. If dandelion is used for disease, please follow the doctor’s instructions!
