Since the discovery of different variants of the new coronavirus in the United Kingdom and South Africa in December 2020, cases of mutant virus infections have been found in many countries and regions around the world. On January 1, the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the first case of mutated virus infection occurred in China. At the same time, “sporadic cases” also appeared in Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing and Heilongjiang. According to a report from the National Health Commission on January 5, from 0 to 24:00 on January 4, 33 new cases of new coronary pneumonia were confirmed nationwide (except Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), including 16 imported cases and 17 local cases. As of 19:00 on January 4, 49 regions across the country have been adjusted to medium-risk regions.
It is worth noting that in this round of the epidemic, super spreaders have also appeared in Shenyang, Dalian and other places. According to a report from China News on January 3, Zhao Lian, deputy director of the Dalian Municipal Health Commission, said at a press conference on the 3rd that the epidemic was detected early, spread quickly, involved many scenes, and had strong spreading power and super spread. Phenomenon: An infected person surnamed Jin infected all 11 people through a family gathering, and then spread to the corridor unit residents and other social contacts where they lived, causing a total of 33 infections. In addition, according to a report from the Shenyang Municipal Health Commission, there have also been “1 Transmission 21” super spreaders in this round of the epidemic in Shenyang, most of which are related to hospitals and clinics.
The continuous spread of the epidemic has undoubtedly sounded the alarm for us. As one of the most successful countries in epidemic prevention and control, we must bear in mind three major lessons in the face of the menacing new crown virus. The first lesson is that large-scale testing is very necessary. There is no doubt that nucleic acid testing has become a sharp sword to control the new crown epidemic. It can determine the scale of the epidemic in a short time and at the same time, it can detect the infected person as soon as possible. Zhang Wenhong, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, said that China’s detection capabilities have now been enhanced. Although sporadic cases cannot be avoided, large-scale spread can basically be avoided.
The second lesson is not to relax and be complacent. According to the “Global Times” citing experts, the mutated new crown virus recently discovered in the UK is more infectious and dominates the epidemic in many regions. To prevent the epidemic, we need to be more vigilant. The third lesson is that “fighting the new crown virus” will take much longer than most people think. One place is under control, but there is still transmission in other areas. As long as people move around, it is difficult to maintain a virus-free state. Therefore, it is estimated that it will take some time to fully return to normal life.
